Welcome to the amazing world of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI)
What's interesting about heroes is they rarely look or act like you might expect. When Desert Rock began a search for heroes to include in the Hot Topz program, it was to our surprise we found 'Real World Heroes' in our own backyard. Desert Rock is proud to introduce several local Scripps Reseach Institute scientists. We've included links to their biographies and research and discovery articles and encourage you to click through and learn more about these fascinating individuals.
Contrary to mainstream 'Sports Hero' images projected by wide media channels, it's unlikely these 'Real World Hereos' can dunk a basketball, throw a 90 MPH curve ball, or rush for 1,000+ yards in a single season. However, these outstanding and dedicated scientists and their collegues are responsible for profound scientific discoveries that are nothing short of lasting contributions to humanity. As a stellar example, please read the Aids Vaccine article highlighting Dennis Burton's discoveries. Just when you thought the Aids battle was fought (and presumably lost), this breathtaking research suggests we may be on the threashold of Total Victory!
The Scripps Research Institute is one of the world's largest independent nonprofit biomedical research organizations with an annual budget of $360 Million. The stated mission of Scripps Research is simply "To serve humanity" through the creation of knowledge, application of breakthroughs in research, and educating young scientists. During our Hot Topz program, Tiffany & Co. will sponsor a brief awards ceremony to publicly acknowledge the contributions of three Scripps scientists who have, most assuredly, served humanity in the finest traditions of the Scripps Research Institute.
The Scripps Research Institute continues it's quest to solve the most complex medical threats to mankind. As a nonprofit organization, TSRI is renowned for it's efficiency and wise use of public and private donations, with just over 94 cents of every donated dollar going directly to program support. It recently earned Charity Navigator's Four Star Rating (the highest possible) for the sixth time in a row.
